Graphic Designer, temporary up to 12 months with possible extension.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Graphic Designer to join our warm, fun, and friendly Design & Communications team within Spatial Services, a division of the Department of Customer Service (DCS).
The Design & Communications team plays a pivotal role in DCS. In addition to its core responsibilities of providing graphic design, desktop publishing, and digital/ inkjet printing, the unit works closely with DSC Branding in providing advice and support in the application of NSW government branding guidelines.
To this end the Design & Communications team operates across DCS to ensure effective communication and high-quality materials are consistently delivered across government.
Reporting to the Team Leader of Design & Communications, you will be responsible for carrying out the production operations of design, Pre-Press, and digital printing.
This primarily includes graphic design, imposition layout, CTP (computer to plate) imaging technology, plate making, scanning, and web design/editing.
You will be responsible for designing artwork, preparing page impositions/layouts, manipulating images, and creating accessible designs.
You will need to effectively communicate within a fast-paced environment while delivering high quality products and apply innovative solutions to address the various challenges related to design, print mediums, and digital delivery.
This role also provides some leadership and guidance to others with some limited responsibility for the output of others.
This role is based in Bathurst NSW in the Design & Communication Team. It is a requirement of this role to work on site at Bathurst due to the nature of work and tools we use. There may be an opportunity to discuss flexible working arrangements such as a hybrid working model and what this may look like on an individual basis.
About the team:
The Design & Communication team provide a range of services from graphic design/desktop publishing and imposition layout for print work, to lithographic plate production.
Our State-of-the-art computer-to-plate (CTP) workflow and colour management systems mean proofs and plates can be produced in less than an hour with 100% consistency.
The Design & Communications team delivers both softcopy and hardcopy products including scanning, digital prints, poster/display prints, factsheets, brochures, and reports. As well as web design, video, and photography services.
With an in-house print team, the Design & Communication team work closely with Press Room staff and clients to ensure expectations are met in both hardcopy and digital products.
We are seeking an individual with a positive can-do attitude, who demonstrates initiative, collaboration skills, attention to detail and a commitment to consistently raising standards in this fast-paced environment.
To be successful in this role:
- Highly proficient skills with Adobe Creative Suite on MAC platform and graphic design techniques
- Ability to apply and follow NSW Government brand guidelines while providing advice and direction
- Competent in layout and pagination techniques used in the print industry
- Competent in digital printing and product output
- Knowledge of Trendsetter Computer to Plate (CTP) system (or equivalent)
- Experience in proofing system devices, colour profiling and colour management
- Ability to work in a close-knit dynamic team environment with strong time management and problem-solving skills
- Outstanding communication skills with strong attention to detail, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn
- Experience in digital photography, web design/maintenance and video production
- Strong ability to develop and maintain robust relationships, as well as collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders across all levels of seniority
- Ability to mentor and train staff and apprentices
- Competent skills & experienced in high end scanning operations

Desirable qualifications:
- Certificate III in Printing & Graphic Arts discipline or equivalent qualification (Pre-Press, Electronic Publishing)
- Relevant Australian Qualifications Framework Certificate III or higher
- A tertiary qualification or industry experience in graphic or web design
- TAFE NSW Design Certificate III for Graphic Artist (or higher)
- TAFE NSW Associate Diploma in Photography or equivalent
